Yesterday was Donut Day, as declared by MOD (Mad over Donuts). They were serving all doughnuts at 25 bucks apiece. And I was only too happy to agree with whatever day it was.
The day was spent in thinking about evening and the time when I would actually get to eat them. The day was spent in calling people who would be interested to give me company. Most of them thought I was plain weird.
Did I mention that I’m a big doughnut lover ? So much so that I named my dog Doughnut. 😀
So, I got out of work as quickly as I could. Took an auto and reached Select Citywalk mall in Saket. I brushed past La Senza and Mango sale (yes. i did that!) and rushed to the food court, panicking about what if all their doughnuts sell out !’
Ap accompanied me and was patient enough to calmly listen to all my rantings, most of them useless. I saw hordes of people thronging the stall and had a sick feeling in my stomach.
It vanished when I saw them replenishing their soon-to-be-sold-out stock of donuts.
I wanted to have them all, but lack of loose cash prevented me.
I got DOUBLE TROUBLE, which according to them is ‘milk chocolate with waves of white chocolate and filled with gooey dark chocolate ganache ‘. I liked it, but the white chocolate is barely existent. And the gooey centre was there, allright. But it wasn’t dark chocolate. Not that I’m complaining.
Second was CHOCOLATE BOMB, which was similar to Double Trouble, but missed so much gooey chocolate inside. I’m not too fond of filled doughnuts when the filling inside is very little.
Third was DARK KNIGHT,which they claim to be ‘crushed Oreo cookies on smooth white chocolate‘. I didn’t like this one bit. The oreos were really hard (even after heating) and there was NO white chocolate. A disappointment this was.
I saw the 2 salty doughnuts displayed in a far corner and wanted to try them. First was PIZZERIA (or something close sounding). They claimed it was herbs and chilli flakes on a cheese bed, with ‘italian’ tomato sauce in the middle.
I bought one. It was not too warm. Just perfect for me.
Went out and took the first bite. I have to admit. It was tasty. Nothing out-of-the-world tasty, just that it suited my mood at that moment. I went back inside wanting another one, but instead got the CHILLI SALSA, which was chilli flakes and roasted garlic spread on a bed of cheese and mayonnaise. In the centre, was tangy salsa sauce. I liked it too.
MOD’s Donut Day was a good excuse to visit the after long.
This brings to me doughnuts. At other places.
Donut Factory was my first love. Before that, I had only eaten bad doughnuts at bakery shops. When Donut Factory opened in Gurgaon, I visited it every week. The charm of seeing your doughnuts being cooked right infront of you was strong enough to make me keep coming back to it. A complicated machine put the batter in oil, fried it at 3 temperatures and finally, a spatula-like thing tossed it out on a mesh.
What you got was tiny ringlets of crisp brown batter that smelled so good. After that, you could choose your toppings. My favourites were milk chocolate, white chocolate and cinnamon dust (not together,of course!)
Time passed and it shut down. I was sad.
I discovered it in Select Citywalk later and ran to it. Literally, ran. However, I found that they had decreased the portion size and increased the prices. The prices are now SKY HIGH. And every time I pass it, I wish it became worth of what I paid for it.
Donut Master is debatable. I LOVE their cinnamon doughnuts. I also think their chocolate flavoured ones are decent. But that’s the end of the story. I had the mango-filled one once and didn’t like it one bit. Marble donut did not deliver the white chocolate, instead it tasted like sweet milk glaze.
What I don’t get is how can people go wrong with white chocolate. It’s the simplest chocolate to work with. Lesser tempering and easier handling gives it an edge over the milk and dark variants. I know purists would argue over the fact that it isn’t even pure chocolate. But hey ! it’s tastes yummy. And who doesn’t remember Milky Bar from their childhood ? !
I also realized recently that VADA is also a doughnut. And so are JALEBI AND IMARTI. Sort of.
So much more to write, but that will come later.
Till then, in the words of Meryl Streep, Bon Appetit !
